Surrounded and Sent
August 5, 2008
Though days are now turning into weeks since we attended the wedding of our daughter in Germany, there are many images that are indelibly etched in our minds. One is the final event of the daylong celebration. Only the closest of relatives and friends remained at 1:00 in the morning. As the band played its final number, the bride and groom danced while the 30 people, still present, joined arm in arm to form a circle around the bridal pair. As the group swayed back and forth to the music, the couple danced in the center of the circle surrounded by those who love them dearly. It was a moment showing the empowerment of support given by love. After the dance was completed, the band continued playing but began walking slowly out of the restaurant, followed by the bridal couple and the guests. Once outside, the band kept playing, but the bride and groom quietly walked away from the group, never looking back. Silhouetted by a lone streetlight and protected from the rain by an umbrella, the couple disappeared into a surrealistic scene of mist and fog, sent off to their life together by those who love and care for them. The moment was charged with emotion, and faces were glistening with moisture produced by more than the rain that was falling.
As there was no rush to end the scene, my mind flooded with thoughts of what had just happened and of its symbolism not only in the lives of the bride and groom, but also in our lives as Christians. God encircles us with His love and builds a protective shield that gives us strength for each moment in our days. By His grace He turns His face towards us and takes our lives, fragmented by sin, and makes them whole again. He does that through His word, by the sacraments, in worship and prayer, and by the love of the family and friends He places around us. Each has its own way of reaching to our inner being and surrounding us with God's grace.
All of that encircling strength is for a purpose…God sends us out into the world to be His messengers. We are called to a life of service and given the purpose of bringing hope and healing to others. We are not sent, however, on a lonely expedition, wandering aimlessly in a foggy mist. Instead, the light of His love and presence shows us the way to go no matter how great the stressful challenges or how unclear the choices that lie before us. Just as family and friends will be present to support the bridal couple, God is near to help, shield, and strengthen us in all we are called to do.
It seems that the words of a song we often sing express it well. We are Sent Forth by God’s Blessing. Though unique for each of us, God's calling is what gives our lives meaning and direction today and every day. We are privileged to serve, no matter the challenge, empowered by our God who loves us always.
So, by God’s grace, we are: Surrounded by love and sent to serve.
May that bring hope and meaning to our calling.
